Lord Dorrien is the son of Lord Rothen and Lady Yilara, and is 24 years old in The Novice. Dorrien inherited his mother's obsessive dedication to healing and took up the Healing discipline on the guidance of Lord Garen. He lives in a village near the South Pass and visits the Guild rarely due to the yearly ailments of the villagers. Yaldin commented that he could charm the wool off a reber if he put his mind to it.

Dorrien helps Sonea enjoy herself instead of studying and also helps to frame Regin. He also gives her the idea to challenge him to duel in the Arena. Before Dorrien leaves the Guild after his visit, he goes to the spring with Sonea and he kisses her. Though due to the events that take place after, Sonea discourages him when he returns again that year, to which he is disappointed. He finds Sonea's formal battle against Regin fascinating.

He finds Akkarin and Sonea in the Pass after they have been exiled, and leads them back over the border. They are attacked by Parika and he believes their story, and they go to Imardin. Dorrien then hides at the Guild so that the Ichani don't learn of them. When they come to the Guild he with Rothen and Balkan help Sonea and Akkarin kill the Ichani. Dorrien was eager to become Sonea's teacher now that she couldn't join normal classes.

After moving to Imardin to help Tylia get used to the city, Dorrien offers to help Sonea in finding Skellin, especially as he didn't want Rothen to risk his life due to his age. He also helped out in the hospices. During this time, he admits that he still has feelings for Sonea, but they knew nothing could come of it as he was married.
