The Elai are creatures made by Huan. Completely hairless they have a broad chest to house large lungs, their large, flat webbed hands and feet to help them swim, and two sets of eyelids, one transparent to protect their eyes. Their skin is smooth, a glossy blue-black in colour, described as similar to that of a ner. Their skin requires constant re-hydration to prevent it drying out.
The Elai distrust Landwalkers, but trade with the Sand Tribe of the Siyee, as they are also a creation of Huan.
The King of the Elai is Ais, and his daughter is Princess Imi.
