Lord Gilken, family Balen, House Sorrel, is the Record-Keeper of the Magicians' Guild. He records of the events that happen in The Mad Apprentice trying to only put down facts, not what he believes. However, sometimes some of his opinions get mixed with the facts. The Record-keeper's room is located in the Guild's Lookout in the highest room, and Gilken has held responsibility of it for the past twenty-three years. He changes his opinions on what should be done with Tagin many times throughout the novella.

Gilken is on of the few Guild magicians to survive Tagin's attack. Gilken, along with three magicians abandoned the Guild and Imardin as way to ensure Tagin didn't kill them all. He returned after Tagin's death and began to call him the Mad Apprentice.
