Tessia was born in the border Ley of Aylen, in Mandryn to the local healer Veran and his wife, Lassia. She initially trained as her father's assistant before the emergence of her latent magical ability, after which she became apprentice to the local landownder, Lord Dakon. Her grandfather was Berin, a healer who was invited to live in Mandryn by Lord Yerven; Lord Dakon's father.
Tessia gained control in two weeks and learns by seeing everything in reference to her physical self. It could come from being healer but Jayan thinks it is more than that. When shown how to use magic in a certain way, she grasps concept immediately and understands all the variations.

Tessia first uses magic against Ashaki Takado when he makes advances on her, though she does not believe it was her who did it. Later Dakon tests her after realising that she is a natural - a person whose magic manifests on their own. She moves into the Residence to start lessons from Dakon, although whilst her father trains another to help him, she occasionally helps him when it is needed. Tessia helped her father while healing Hanara, after Takado punished him. Hanara and Tessia become friends for her actions. Tessia becomes involved (along with Dakon and his other apprentice, Jayan) in the battle against an invading group of Sachakans. Along the way, Tessia discovers ways to harness her magical power to heal those who are wounded or sick. She also faces the inferior role of women in a society ruled by men. When the invasion at Mandryn occurred Tessia's parents died, along with almost everybody else in the village. Tessia at first has a cold relationship with Jayan, who dismisses her obsession with healing. As the book progresses the pair become friends, and ultimately end up married by the Epilogue. During the book, Tessia develops the magical knowledge of healing, which was unknown before. Her first patient in which he used this ability with full success was Jayan, after Stara attacked him during the invasion to Arvice. She healed other people with magic too, such as Refan and a poisoned magician. This is different to normal healing because she only blocked the pain or she accelerated some body processes. |
