|Book Origin||The Black Magician Trilogy|
|Spoilers from "The Novice"|
Ambassador Dannyl describes him as muscled, and takes an immediate dislike to the man once they have a conversation. He claims Velend reminds him of Fergun; because of his attitude as well as his interest in sword training.
It is heavily implied that Velend has a romantic interest in Tayend, when he starts spending time in The Great Library where the scholar works. Dannyl makes the assumption that Tayend also has feelings for Velend. But Tayend makes it clear to the magician that his interests lie elsewhere.
